You da man Kev! Your color keys, i think, are lookin nice! Real nice atmosphere and lighting... I'm impressed, mainly cause i dont think we get to see much of your color work around these parts... unless it happens to deal with work stuff... Very nice to see... Reading up on your process it seems real painstaking to me, and i can relate to the struggles or all the "passes". But man, the more passes you have the further it'll get away from the essance if ya dont watch out. My problem, at times, is also watching out and making sure that whatever my process is it's practicle. Otherwise it'll take forever to get a good amount of work done. And that might be an issue if ya dont have a ton of free time... or if youre lazy... ;) Nice stuff though.... cant wait homes!
Keep it moving... I agree with Jav. The cleanup looks solid, but the loose lifelike feeling is more apparant in the other illustrations. I feel the motion.
I have the same issues too. Trying to match in a final what was accidently - or naturally - captured in a rough.
I have to say, I like the face details in the batman cleanup. I also see the shadow markings on there - looks like it can turn out pretty good!
I agree with Jav and Dave, keep this puppy movin'. I also sensed (by your words) that this is (or can be)a somewhat painful, frastrating process for you. Color keys look great, you got a nice tight drawing to build on, now just do it.....
.....And when you finish this weekend (hint).......try blowing through a couple color studies, or sketches, in a short period of time for your next venture. Forget about the finished piece and experience the fun of creating. Let go (I want to get t-shirts printed of this saying).

If I jumped in earlier I'd have said the same as all those other shmoes :) Just keep movin'. If it ain't clean enough or perfect enough, you can try honing your skills in your next drawing. But like you said yourself, you want to retain most of that spontaneity. Pass after pass of clean up can kill that totally. I see it myself. I always want to hammer out as much of the design work as possible on paper because I don't trust the computer doing the work when it gets to that stage. Because of that, I used to find myself going over and over the final image so the line work and shapes could just be mindlessly redrawn in Flash. Then, ultimately, I might notice something really wrong and I'll try to fix it digitally. And then it's like, jeez, I went though all that work trying to get the cleanest, best image possible and now I'm still fixing it.
So yeah, I've learned to hit the brakes when somethin' spills out of my hand that I like. I'm balancing the work in the computer with the hand draw work. Stuff that's lose in sketch form, but somethin' I really like, will just evolve when I get it in Flash. Hopefully for the better.
It's all about the circle of Life Kevin... Simba taught me that.
In other news, I really really dig theose knobby fists on ol' Batty here. Beautifully drawn hands make me cry and right now I'm bawlin' like a baby here...
